Overview

This tape is a "zanjīl" from the seventies. "Zanjīl" in the colloquial dialect means "chain," signifying that this tape includes a series of songs. These are popular Mawṣilī songs, and it seems to be from private sessions ("al-munāsabāt al-khāṣṣah") that the Mawṣilī artist "Fawzī Saʿīd" used to perform, as indicated by the celebratory nature of the songs related to engagement and marriage. The first song, "Yā māshiṭah mashshiṭīhā," begins at (0:01-2:50). This popular song is performed at weddings, specifically in the "bride's" house, and is a call to the woman responsible for preparing the bride, the "māshiṭah." Then the second song, "Yā qaḍīb al-bān," begins connected to the first song, from (2:55-10:33). "Qaḍīb al-bān" is "Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿĪsá ibn Yaḥyá ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥasanī," a Sufi from Mawṣil, born there in 1079 and died in 1177. He has stories and anecdotes with the Sufi shaykh "ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī." "Qaḍīb al-bān" had a shrine that ISIS destroyed in 2014 when they occupied the city of Mawṣil. This figure holds religious, spiritual, and social value for the people of Mawṣil. The song is a request from a woman to "Qaḍīb al-bān" to protect her beloved, according to popular news and singing legends. The original melody of this song was composed by the musician, poet, and Sufi "Mullā ʿUthmān al-Mawṣilī," and then it became famous and was used in emotional and social songs. Then the third song comes from (10:33-12:50), which is part of the song "Ṣāḥ al-qiṭār qūmī inzilī." This is a popular song belonging to the spring trips and daily excursions that the people of Mawṣil used to take by train. It consists of words addressed by women to their sleeping companion, waking her up by saying, "Ṣāḥ al-qiṭār qūmī inzilī kān waṣalnā Ḥammām ʿAlī," meaning "The train has blown its arrival whistle, come down, for we have reached Ḥammām al-ʿAlīl." However, the people of Mawṣil say "Ḥammām ʿAlī." It is an area south of Mawṣil that includes natural springs where water flows, and people bathe in them for healing from skin diseases. The tape then ends with the mawwāl "Mā lī ghayruk" from (12:51-13:59), which is one of the most famous performances by the artist "Fawzī Saʿīd."
