Overview

"Fawzi Said" is an artist and musician born in Mosul in 1941. He learned to play oud and violin, then moved to Baghdad to immerse himself in the artistic scene. His artistic career began when he appeared on the program "Rukn Al-Hawa" broadcasted by the Iraqi government radio and television. He also sang many Baghdadi songs, and his sons "Arkan and Firas" accompanied him in most of his performances. He is also a composer, having recorded Mosuli albums of his own songs, and collaborated with artist "Zaki Ibrahim." "Fawzi Said" is known in artistic circles as "Fawzi Said Al-Hazeen"[The Sad Fawzi] due to his use of melancholic maqamat in his songs, which gave a general atmosphere of sadness to his works. Among his notable songs in "Maqam Saba" is "Ashkan Al-Dalal Ashkanat Asbabu,." In his songs Fawzi narrated stories of daily life daily life in Mosul.

This tape dates back to the early 1970s and includes several popular songs in the Mosuli dialect. The first song, "Baho Yaheb Kellula," starts from minute (1:00 – 3:20). "Baho and Kellula" are symbolic names for legendary or mythical characters who lived a love story. The second song, "Kun Qamalt Al-Ghasta," begins from minute (3:40 – 6:10), and it is a dialogue between a woman and her daughter-in-law regarding "Al-Rishta/Al-Ghasta," a traditional homemade Mosuli noodles made from wheat flour after being kneaded with water and salt, then left to dry and prepared for cooking. The phrase "Qamalt Al-Ghasta" refers to the food being attacked by lice due to being stored in an underground cellar out of fear from Ottoman soldiers who would invade homes and seize food. The third song, "Makrudi Ya Qalami," starts from minute (6:47 – 10:16), and it is also a popular song in the Mosuli dialect.
